Life Skills 4 My Family is Unique. It’s a Family Education Program for both Parents AND Children!

This is a family education program; more than just a parenting class or individual child therapy. Parenting classes are helpful, but both parents and children should be jointly learning new skills; not just the parents. In this program, both parents and children learn together by watching  video presentations, completing family activities, and jointly practising their new skills.  This ensures all family members work from the same page and the program becomes a fun family project. Life Skills is an education program that’s like family therapy, parenting classes, child therapy, behaviour therapy, and group therapy rolled into one!

The program is ideal both for families wishing to fine tune their skills, as well as families struggling with issues related to family conflict, oppositional behaviour, or children with anger management difficulties.

How does the program work?

Family Video Classes Focus on Anger Management Training and Learning Responsible Behaviour.

Parents and children watch 10 family video classes (streamed from You Tube) and total viewing time is about 6 hours. The classes are not a dry recital of facts. They utilize games, magic, humour, skits, and treasure hunts to teach specific anger management and life skills. Skills that can be applied at home, school, and on the playground.

Each family video class covers one skill. An essential component is hands-on learning, so there are short skits for the family to put on as well as board games and family activities to complete during and after each class. There are 30 handouts included for both parents and children.

Parenting Classes / Parent Training as part of Module 1, which focuses on Anger Management.

There are two parenting  classes / workshops on video totalling 2 hours. Parents learn how to promote positive skills and how to respond to inappropriate displays of anger such as temper tantrums, rudeness, and disrespect. Parents also learn the best way to respond to oppositional behaviour such as whining, arguing, defiance, and sibling conflict. The program doesn’t give common simplistic advice such as stay calm, be positive, speak quietly, reason with your child, don’t give-in, give choices, or similar obvious advice. Instead, parents learn practical and specific ways to respond to bad behaviour and to create the conditions where children have no choice but to put their newly learned anger management skills into use.

Parents learn what to do when kids refuse to accept consequences, refuse to leave the room, when reasoning and staying calm fails, or when a confrontation is escalating and a child is is becoming aggressive or out of control. Traditional parenting programs cover many parenting techniques, but they they often give theoretical or generalized advice, not practical hands-on instruction. After 25 years of clinical work, I know normal parenting strategies can fail for certain kids or when behaviour is out of control.  Telling someone what they should do is very different than teaching someone how to do it. This program teaches “how to do it”, so parents can deal with kids in even the most difficult of circumstances.

A Parenting Manual preps parents for each family  video class and helps parents reinforce the life skills and anger management skills their children are learning.

A 66 page parent manual helps parents prepare for what will be covered in each upcoming video class . The manual details how parents can continue teaching the skills the following week and practical parenting interventions are presented in down-to-earth language and  summarized in easy-to-follow point form. You won’t be frustrated by vague or impractical theoretical advice, you won’t have to decipher psychological jargon, and you won’t waste time wading through antidotes and family stories.

Two Parent Workbooks teach Listening Skills and ways to build a child’s Self-Esteem and Confidence.

Workbook 1 teaches active listening and communication skills helpful not only for parenting but for everyday adult conversation.
Workbook 2 teaches parents how to celebrate their child’s success in putting new skills to use and ways to build a child’s self-confidence and self-esteem.

Four more Parent Manuals are an entire parenting class by themselves. Modules 2 through 5 teach parents how to promote responsible, cooperative, independent behaviour, build their child’s self-esteem, and tackle the dreaded homework.

Life Skills 4 My Family is far more than an management program. It includes 5 modules covering multiple life skills and parenting skills (click here for the specific skills covered in each module).  Module 1 is the family program which includes anger management skills.

There are four more modules consisting of 4 parent manuals:
Module 2: Promoting Cooperation, Responsibility, Self Esteem & Positive Attitudes.
Module 3: Using Consequences Effectively: Teaching Life Lessons.
Module 4: Promoting Responsible & Independent Behaviour: Bedtime & Morning Routines.
Module 5: Tackling Homework.

Note: The Homework Module is being offered for free during the Covid-19 crisis. While designed for homework, many of the ideas and suggestions can be modified to help your child stay focused and motivated to complete short periods of home study and learning. Click here to access the Module.

There are three family board games unique to Life Skills 4 My Family that teach kids how to challenge negative thoughts and learn more positive and helpful self-talk. Based on cognitive therapy / cognitive restructuring principles.

The Know My Family Game: A board game designed to enhance family communication, create a fun and positive start to the program, and encourage child participation.

Escape From the Land of Trouble Game: A board game based on cognitive therapy and cognitive restructuring designed to help children develop new anger management skills.  It’s critical that kids learn new thoughts to counter negative and angry thinking. I originally developed and used this game for many years in individual child therapy. It has been modified for family play.

The Easy Going Game: A board game based on cognitive therapy and cognitive restructuring designed to help children learn positive thoughts about being a responsible, hard working individual, while countering thoughts leading to procrastination, and lack of motivation. I originally developed and used this game for many years in individual child therapy. It has been modified for family play.

These classes / workshops were developed by Dr. David Ricketts, in Calgary, Alberta

Life Skills 4 My Family began as two child group therapy programs called Anger Busters and Confidence Builders that my partner and I developed and ran for 15 years in Calgary. The programs included group therapy for children, family therapy sessions, and parenting classes for parents. Over 1000 Calgary children and their families participated in the programs. After 25 years of practice as a psychologist, I retired from active clinical work in 2009. As a retirement project, I put together this in-home video based program so families could continue to benefit from learning these critical skills in a cost effective manner and without having to attend parent workshops and children’s groups.  Click for more information on my background.

Why Should I trust some program listed on the internet?

I only promote this program in Alberta. I live in Calgary and worked as a psychologist here for 25 years. Use the contact form to request a program or with any questions.  I will get back to you by phone or email.  You’re welcome to discuss your family’s needs and/or meet me in my home and inspect the program prior to buying. I do not accept payments over the internet. Only cash or email money transfer at the time you pick up the program or order it. If you return the program within 30 days, I’ll give you a full refund (minus any mailing costs if I mailed you the program). The cost is extremely affordable for what you get – the same services if provided in a combination of live groups plus family and individual child therapy sessions would cost over $2500.
